Tanzania dethrones Nigeria Yellow Green at NCF Women’s T20 International Cricket Tournament

Posted : 05 March 2024

It was a classy performance by the East African giants, Tanzania, as they cruised past Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Rwanda to win the 4th Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) Women’s T20i International tournament on Sunday, March 4, 2024, in Lagos.

True to Captain Neema’s boastful prediction, Tanzania dusted off their only loss to Rwanda to win the remainder of games in the competition.

The tournament debutantes dominated batting and bowling to lift the trophy at the TBS Oval in Lagos, where they beat Sierra Leone by 92 runs in their final game.

Saumu Mtae toppled her teammate, Hudaa Omaary, to top batting with a total of 203 runs in 6 matches.

Omaary scored 155 runs, while her compatriot Perice Zakayo was the third top batter.

In the bowling category, the ICC 5th-ranked team dominated as well through the fierce bowler Perice Zakayo but shared 11 wickets dismissed with Rwanda’s Rosine Irera.

Nigerian teenager, Shola Adekunle, was the third-best bowler with 11 wickets.

Tanzania’s Perice Zakayo won the Most Valuable Player of the Series.

In their last match of the final day, Nigeria showcased a superb performance against long-time rivals, Rwanda.

The Female Yellow Greens successfully defended their score of 110 runs.

Piety Lucky was in her element to make Nigerian fans proud.

She batted the highest individual runs of 28 runs off 22 balls and also banished her previous poor fielding as she caught Flora Irakoze’s ball.

Nigeria’s tight fielding kept Rwanda’s runs at 90, and the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs.

The Greens won by 20 runs, with Nigeria’s Peculiar Agboya winning the Player of the Match Award.
