Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar surged ahead on the final climb to win the 14th stage of the Tour de France on Saturday, increasing his overall lead to nearly two minutes. The climactic battle between Pogacar and two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard unfolded when Pogacar made his move with about three miles remaining.
"I love racing on instinct," Pogacar said. "Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I love it that way." Pogacar caught up with and overtook his UAE Emirates teammate Adam Yates, while Vingegaard was initially dropped but managed to limit his losses, crossing the line 39 seconds behind Pogacar.
Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel finished third in the stage and dropped to third overall behind Vingegaard. "I stayed with him a little, but he rode faster and faster and I was dropped," Evenepoel said. "The pace was very high." Pogacar's lead over Vingegaard is now 1 minute and 57 seconds, with just over a week remaining in the race.
The day's stage included two challenging climbs, the Col du Tourmalet and the ascent to Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d'Adet. Irishman Ben Healy initially led the attack but was eventually caught by Yates, who set up Pogacar for his 13th Tour stage win. Sunday's 15th stage features four big climbs and falls on Bastille Day, with the race finishing in Nice this year due to the Olympic Games.
