Tadej Pogacar delivered a statement performance at the Criterium du Dauphine, clinching a dominant win on stage six to claim the race leader's yellow jersey. The reigning Tour de France and world champion powered away in trademark fashion during the mountainous 126.7km stage to Combloux, finishing one minute and one second ahead of Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard. With the result, Pogacar now leads the general classification by 43 seconds over his chief rival, further intensifying their rivalry ahead of July's Tour de France.
The Slovenian rider, representing UAE Team Emirates-XRG, launched his decisive attack with seven kilometers remaining, effortlessly distancing himself while remaining seated through steep inclines. He credited his teammates for setting up the opportunity, saying they went “full gas” on the first-category climb and executed the strategy perfectly.
Pogacar also revealed a personal motivation to finish quickly—he was eager to catch the end of his fiancée Urska Zigart’s race at the Tour de Suisse. “It was a hot day, and I wanted to hurry to see the finish,” he said.
While Pogacar surged, Remco Evenepoel, who had held the yellow jersey, faltered on the climbs and dropped to fourth overall, now 1:22 behind Pogacar. Evenepoel lost significant time after being unable to match the tempo set by Pogacar and Vingegaard, who remains second in the standings. The stage result showcased a clear hierarchy among cycling’s current top contenders and left Pogacar well-positioned as the Tour de France looms.
With only two stages left in the Dauphine, including Saturday's grueling route featuring three hors catégorie climbs, more fireworks are expected in the French Alps. Though only four winners of the Dauphine have gone on to win the Tour de France in the last decade, Pogacar’s commanding display and sharp form suggest he may be on course to defy that trend. As he put it, “We need to hold our horses for the Tour,” yet his performance has already turned heads across the cycling world.
