Tadej Pogacar is looking to conclude an extraordinary year by equaling Fausto Coppi's remarkable record of four consecutive victories at Il Lombardia, the final "Monument" race of the cycling season. The Slovenian superstar made history last month when he claimed his first world championship title, becoming only the third cyclist to secure the rainbow jersey, the Tour de France, and the Giro d'Italia in a single year, alongside legends Stephen Roche and Eddy Merckx.
As Pogacar prepares to compete in the Race of the Falling Leaves in northern Italy, he reflects on his impressive achievements. He noted, "It's been the perfect season for us this year. All the team worked really hard and things really clicked for us." With a strong desire to cap off his season with another victory, he is determined to deliver a strong performance in Lombardia, following his stunning solo attack in last year's edition.
Over the past eight months, Pogacar has showcased his talent and tenacity, starting his season with a commanding victory at Strade Bianche and recently claiming a significant win in Switzerland. His remarkable campaign also included a second Liege-Bastogne-Liege title and six stage victories in both the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, solidifying his place among cycling's elite and positioning him as a successor to the greats like Coppi and Merckx.
Pogacar will rely on a strong team for the challenging 252-kilometer course between Bergamo and Como, featuring 4,800 meters of climbing. His support squad includes Adam Yates and Rafal Majka, both of whom have previously reached the podium at Il Lombardia. The only significant threat to Pogacar's chances may come from double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, who has had a stellar season but faced recent challenges, including an eye issue that led to his withdrawal from the Giro dell'Emilia. Despite this, Evenepoel remains a motivated competitor, eager to make an impact at Lombardia.
