Swimmer Victor Johansson Prepares for Seine Challenge at Paris Olympics

Posted : 25 July 2024

Swimmer Victor Johansson is eager for the unique experience of competing in the Seine at the Paris Olympics, but he had a light-hearted query after watching the city’s mayor swim in the river. Clad in a wetsuit and goggles, Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the river on July 17 to demonstrate its safety for Olympic swimmers and triathletes, whose events will take place from July 26 to August 11.

"I saw some videos, but the question is - how did she feel the day after?" Johansson said with a smile, speaking to Reuters before his team headed to Paris. "That's my question, but then again, a lot can change - she was in it just a few days ago, and the open water event for me is on the ninth of August, which is still weeks away."

To ensure the river is clean enough for competition, Paris has invested significantly, including constructing a massive storage basin that holds 46,000 cubic meters of wastewater. A recent water quality bulletin indicated that the Seine should be suitable for swimming six out of seven days during the Olympic competitions, though this is contingent on weather conditions and rainfall.

Johansson, a 25-year-old long-distance specialist, acknowledged the challenges of open-water swimming, noting the physicality of the sport. "We're about 30 or 40 swimmers that are gonna throw themselves in the water at the same time, and there's gonna be a lot of fists and knees and kicks," he said. "I've finished races with bruises and blood coming out of my mouth and my eyes because they hit your goggles. It's a lot more physical than a regular pool race."
