Straka Takes Lead at Pebble Beach Pro-Am After Strong Finish

Posted : 02 February 2025

Sepp Straka birdied four of the last five holes to take a one-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry after the third round of the PGA Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Saturday. Despite challenging conditions, including gusting winds, heavy rain, and cold temperatures, Straka shot a two-under 70 to reach 16-under-par 200. McIlroy and Lowry both posted impressive rounds of seven-under 65, battling through the difficult weather to stay within striking distance.

Straka, who had struggled with three bogeys on the back nine, rallied late to reclaim the lead with a four-foot birdie putt at the par-5 18th. His performance included a birdie putt at the par-3 17th from 29 feet and a bunker shot to four feet at 18, which he converted for a birdie. The Austrian, who won the American Express event just two weeks ago, acknowledged the challenging conditions but was proud of his comeback. "It was a bit of a roller coaster out there," Straka said, reflecting on his performance.

McIlroy and Lowry also had strong showings, with McIlroy birdieing three of the last four holes and Lowry sinking three birdies over the final five holes. Both players battled through the rough weather, with McIlroy highlighting his solid play through the tough early holes. Lowry, who recorded seven birdies, two bogeys, and an eagle, described the conditions as "miserable at times" but emphasized the importance of birdying the easier holes. With one round to go, the trio remains in a tight contest, with Straka holding the narrow advantage.

As the final round approaches, McIlroy is aiming for his 27th career PGA Tour win, while Lowry seeks his fourth PGA victory and first since their win together at the 2022 New Orleans pairs event. Both players have their sights set on a strong finish, with McIlroy eager to secure his first win of the season, especially on a course that has historically been challenging for him. Lowry, too, is hoping to cap off a successful week, with both players having their sights set on the victory.
