England's Steve Lewton claimed his second Asian Tour title on Sunday, ending a decade-long drought with a victory at the Indonesia Open. The win came after a dramatic sudden-death playoff, where Lewton's birdie on the second extra hole secured his triumph over Australia's Aaron Wilkin and China's Sampson Zheng. All three competitors had finished the tournament tied at 16-under-par 268 at the Damai Indah Golf Club in Jakarta.
The victory was particularly sweet for the 41-year-old Lewton, who had nearly let it slip away in regulation play. After back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, Lewton held a two-stroke lead, only to stumble with a double-bogey on the 18th, leading to a three-under 68 for the round. Zheng, a rookie on the Asian Tour, also shot a 68, while Wilkin, who had set a course record with a 61 on Thursday, posted a two-under 69.
Reflecting on his win, Lewton expressed relief after several years of strong but ultimately fruitless performances. "It's just been a long, long time, and I feel like in the last three years, I've been playing quite good," he said. Lewton had finished as the runner-up at the Indonesia Open for the past two years, making this victory even more satisfying. His previous win was at the Taiwan Masters in 2014, two years after debuting on the Asian Tour.
In the playoff, after a challenging final hole in regulation where he found water off the tee, Lewton was thrilled to finally secure the victory. "I birdied 16 and 17 and then had a mini-disaster on 18," he admitted. "I was just very happy to get it done the second time of asking in the play-off. I am very happy not to finish second again." Meanwhile, Australia's Travis Smyth and China's Liu Yanwei finished just a stroke behind, tying for fourth place with scores of 67 and 68, respectively.
