Stephen Williams from Wales has taken the lead in the Tour of Britain after securing a victory in the 152km second stage held in Redcar on Wednesday. Williams, riding for Israel-Premier Tech, showcased an impressive sprint to surpass Julian Alaphilippe, a former two-time world champion, and secure the win. Oscar Onley finished in third place, just behind Williams.
Williams expressed his joy at the win, saying, "Just over the moon to get the hands in the air in the UK." He acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting that maintaining the lead requires a combination of favorable conditions and a strong team effort. He expressed confidence in his team's capabilities and hopes for a smooth journey on the road as he aims to hold onto the jersey.
Currently, Williams leads the overall standings by six seconds ahead of Onley, with Alaphilippe trailing by an additional 10 seconds in third place. The competition remains intense as the riders continue to vie for the top position.
The third stage of the Tour of Britain is set to cover 166km from Sheffield to Barnsley on Thursday, adding further excitement to the race as the cyclists push through the remaining stages.
