Stan Moody Stuns Jak Jones to Set Up Kyren Wilson Showdown at Northern Ireland Open

Posted : 24 October 2024

Stan Moody showcased his rising potential by defeating Crucible finalist Jak Jones 4-0, advancing to the last 16 of the BetVictor Northern Ireland Open. The victory sets up an exciting clash against World Champion Kyren Wilson in Belfast, where a win would mark Moody's first appearance in a quarter-final. This impressive run comes as a stark contrast to his challenging rookie season in 2023/24, where he won only eight matches. This season, however, the 18-year-old has already claimed 12 victories, beating notable players like Zhang Anda, Tom Ford, Ryan Day, and Jones.

Reflecting on his progress, Moody highlighted the changes he made to his game and physical routine, crediting these adjustments for his improved form. "I wasn’t ready to beat top players last season, but I’ve worked on my game and it’s paid off," said the Yorkshire talent after firing breaks of 92 and 103. Moody’s newfound discipline, fitness regimen, and diet have helped him achieve consistent performances, and he now relishes the opportunity to compete against snooker’s best on a big stage.

Meanwhile, Kyren Wilson narrowly edged Anthony McGill 4-3 in a tense match, reminiscent of their 2020 Crucible semi-final. Wilson, who took the first frame with a 77 break, faced a comeback from McGill, who produced breaks of 112 and 131. Despite McGill’s momentum, Wilson recovered to win, with a series of crucial plays in the deciding frame. Elsewhere, Neil Robertson cruised to a 4-0 win over Wang Yuchen, while Mark Williams defeated Noppon Saengkham 4-1, featuring a tournament-high break of 143.
