Springbok dominance leaves Scotland in Rugby labyrinth

Posted : 11 September 2023
Finn Russell found himself in a rugby labyrinth in Marseille, navigating a maze of Springbok giants obstructing his path. Scotland fans had dreamt of a competitive clash, but reality was harsh.

They envisioned their team challenging the mighty Springboks, but it felt like peashooters against artillery. South Africa's precision was relentless, dismantling Scotland's lineout and gradually eroding their scrum.

Russell displayed bravery despite an early injury, but his brilliance was needed elsewhere. Every attempt to spark an attack was stifled by Pieter-Steph du Toit's suffocating presence. The Springboks' blitz defense left Scotland surrounded.

Huw Jones, Sione Tuipolutu, Duhan van der Merwe, and Darcy Graham struggled to get involved. Russell mainly saw Du Toit as his marker, an unrelenting nightmare for Scotland.

Early on, Jesse Kriel's high tackle on Jack Dempsey went unpunished, a potential red card. Scotland could have played most of the match against 14 Boks, which might have altered the game's flow.

Kriel may face a citation, benefiting Ireland rather than Scotland. The game's outcome might not have changed, but we should have seen how Kriel's absence would affect it.
