Spain emerged victorious in a thrilling final against Uruguay at the World Rugby U20 Trophy 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya. The 39-32 scoreline showcased the enthralling and breathtaking rugby played by both teams, leaving the crowd at Nyayo National Stadium in awe.
Spain's historic win secured their spot in the top tier of international age-grade rugby for the first time. The heartbreak of missing out on the title was evident for Uruguay, who had previously won the inaugural final in 2008.
The last day of the tournament also witnessed other exciting matches, with Scotland securing third place by defeating Samoa 83-10 in the bronze final. The USA claimed seventh place with a 47-22 victory over Hong Kong China.
Zimbabwe spoiled the home team's closing party with a dominant 64-10 victory over Kenya in the fifth-place play-off. It was Zimbabwe's biggest-ever win and highest score in the competition.
In the final, Spain faced a challenging start, but they bounced back after a try from Borja Ibanez Escalera and a penalty conversion by Beau Finnian Peart. They continued their impressive display, scoring two more tries to lead at halftime.
Uruguay displayed resilience, scoring brilliant tries through Juan Carlos Canessa and Pedro Hoblog, bringing the score to 31-27 in Spain's favor. However, Spain maintained their composure and secured the victory with a try from Diego Gonzalez.
The tournament showcased outstanding performances from the teams, with Spain shining as they claimed their well-deserved victory and secured their spot in the World Rugby U20 Championship for the first time.
