John Bland, a South African golfer whose professional career lasted more than 40 years and included eight senior championships in addition to two victories on the European Tour, has passed away. He was 77.
Sunshine Tour golfing in South Africa made the announcement of Bland's passing. The Sunshine Tour said that he passed away on Tuesday following a cancer struggle, with his family and bulldog Handsome by his side.
In total, Bland won 36 championships and put on some of his most illustrious performances while competing against the top athletes in the world.
He defeated two-time Masters winner Bernhard Langer at the Benson and Hedges International in England in 1983, and he defeated golfing legend Seve Ballesteros by four strokes at the Suze Open in France in 1986 for his two victories on the European tour.
With his most recent victory coming in 2010, Bland has won five times on the Senior PGA Tour and three times on the European Senior Tour. At the 1997 Senior British Open, he was defeated by nine-time major champion and fellow countryman Gary Player in a playoff.
