South African Women Golfers Set for Global Opportunities at Vodacom Origins of Golf

Posted : 17 September 2024

South African women’s golf is set to make another significant stride this week as seven women professionals compete in the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament at Sishen Golf Club from Thursday to Sunday. This event, part of the Sunshine Tour, offers these players a chance to develop their international careers in the sport. The inclusion of women professionals in this prestigious tournament is part of a growing movement to provide greater opportunities for South African women in global golf.

Following the success of last season, where Sunshine Ladies Tour professionals competed alongside their Sunshine Tour counterparts, the women players will not only vie for the same prize money but also for opportunities beyond local tournaments. The four-tournament Vodacom Origins of Golf series will include a dedicated Order of Merit for the women, with additional incentives for the top performers. These include a cash bonus, automatic entry into the 2025 Joburg Ladies Open—co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour (LET)—and three invitations to compete in the LET’s Access Series.

The Access Series serves as the LET’s development tour, providing a pathway for emerging golfers to earn their place on the main tour. Players who finish in the top six on the Order of Merit at the end of the Access Series gain full playing privileges on the LET, while those ranked seventh to twentieth qualify for the final stage of the LET’s Qualifying School. This initiative creates an invaluable opportunity for South Africa’s rising female golfers to make their mark on the international stage.

Dr. Ntombi Mhangwani, Executive Head of Vodacom Business Marketing, emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “We’re focused on partnering with women to help them reach their goals in golf.” Gabrielle Venter, one of the participants in this week’s tournament, echoed this sentiment, expressing her excitement about the additional incentives. Venter highlighted the significance of the Access Series invitation and the Joburg Ladies Open, both of which offer valuable world ranking points and the chance to gain crucial experience on the European circuit.
