South African Doug Watson has been appointed as the head coach of the Scotland men's cricket team, following a successful stint as interim coach last summer.
During his interim period, Scotland achieved notable victories in the ICC World Cup qualifier and secured their spot in the T20 World Cup through the T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier.
Watson, currently coaching Auckland Aces, will assume his role in April. Under his leadership, Scotland will face England, Australia, Oman, and Namibia in the T20 World Cup group stages.
Having served as Auckland Aces' coach since June 2022, Watson led them to victory in New Zealand's domestic T20 tournament, the Super Smash, and the final of the 50-over Ford Trophy this season.
Excited about rejoining Scotland, Watson praised the players' determination and passion. The upcoming T20 World Cup presents challenging fixtures against formidable opponents, but Watson sees it as an opportunity for the team to showcase their skills and determination.
Watson's coaching experience includes roles with Mumbai Indians, Wellington, Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland, and Namibia, along with a stint as New Zealand's batting coach in the 2023 Test series against England. Cricket Scotland's head of performance, Steve Snell, highlighted Watson's enthusiasm and interest in elevating Scottish cricket during the interview process.
Snell expressed satisfaction with securing Watson's services permanently, emphasizing his high-quality coaching, cricketing experience, people skills, and anticipated positive impact on both the men's squad and Scottish cricket as a whole.
