James Slipper is set to become the second most-capped player in Super Rugby this weekend, but his focus remains on helping the Brumbies secure a rare victory at Eden Park rather than celebrating his personal milestone. The 35-year-old prop, already the most-capped Wallaby, will earn his 186th Super Rugby cap, surpassing Aaron Smith and trailing only Wyatt Crockett’s 202 appearances.
While acknowledging the significance of the achievement, Slipper emphasized his commitment to team success, stating that his priority is performing well for the Brumbies rather than individual accolades.
The Brumbies began the season with a strong victory over the Fijian Drua but have struggled defensively in recent losses to the Western Force and the Chiefs, conceding 94 points in those two games. Although they have been prolific in attack, scoring 12 tries in that stretch, Slipper admitted that their defensive lapses need to be addressed, especially against a Blues side featuring several All Blacks.
He noted that strong defensive performances are often what separate the top teams and emphasized that the Brumbies must improve in that area if they hope to compete against the reigning Super Rugby Pacific champions.
The Blues, meanwhile, have had their own challenges, losing their first two matches before securing a dramatic win over the Hurricanes last weekend. However, that victory came at a cost, with flanker Dalton Papali’i potentially sidelined due to injury and No. 8 Hoskins Sotutu facing a three-week suspension after being sent off.
Despite these setbacks, Slipper expects a tough contest against a team filled with dangerous attacking players. He acknowledged the Blues’ confidence following their latest win and highlighted the importance of stepping up defensively if the Brumbies hope to claim their first victory at Eden Park since 2013.
