David Skinns narrowly missed a 9-foot putt that would have secured him a rare 59, but he still set a career-best and tournament-record 60 to take the lead after the first round of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. Reflecting on his round, Skinns described it as surreal, noting that he was surprised to be 7 under without feeling like he had done much. At 12 under par, Skinns holds a three-shot lead over Michael Thorbjornsen, with Gary Woodland and Ben Griffin tied for third at 8-under 64.
Skinns began his round on the back nine at the Country Club of Jackson, notching six birdies on each side. His most impressive moment came at the par-3 seventh, where he sank a 54-foot birdie putt, followed by a near eagle at the par-4 eighth. However, his shot at golf history fell just short on the ninth hole, as his putt for a 59 veered left. Although slightly disappointed, Skinns acknowledged how challenging it is to get such an opportunity and remained focused on the many successful shots throughout his round.
Thorbjornsen, a 23-year-old former Stanford star, had a bogey-free round with nine birdies, placing him second with a score of 9 under par. Though he started the week ranked No. 134 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, Thorbjornsen has already secured his PGA Tour card through the PGA Tour University pathway. Reflecting on his recent struggles, he emphasized the importance of consistency and hard work to improve his game, resulting in his impressive performance.
Several other players are in contention, including Patton Kizzire and Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, who shot 7-under 65 to tie for fifth. Defending champion Luke List finished at 2-under 70, while fan favorite Reed Hughes, a 71-year-old Mississippi native, struggled to a 4-over 76 after a promising start. Despite the challenges, Hughes expressed his amazement at competing at this level, savoring the opportunity to play in the event.
