Simone Biles Aims for Sixth Eponymous Skill at Paris Olympics

Posted : 26 July 2024

US gymnastics legend Simone Biles is set to unveil a new, unique skill on the uneven bars at the Paris Olympics, aiming to have a sixth move named in her honor. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) announced on Friday that Biles has submitted the skill to the technical committee for evaluation.

This new move, described by FIG as "a clear hip circle forward with 1 1/2 turns to handstand," builds on a skill originally performed by Canadian gymnast Wilhelm Weiler. If Biles successfully executes the skill during the Games, it will be the sixth skill named after her, giving her one on each apparatus. She currently has two skills named on vault, two on floor exercise, and one on the balance beam.

The new skill involves Biles performing a full circle below one bar, transitioning into a handstand, and then completing a 1 1/2 turn before finishing in the handstand position. FIG indicated that Biles is expected to incorporate this move at the beginning of her uneven bars routine.

If accomplished, Biles will become the only active female gymnast with a named skill on all four apparatuses. Skills are named for the first gymnast to successfully complete them at major international events. Biles, who won four gold medals at the Rio Olympics and faced challenges in Tokyo due to the "twisties," will start her Paris campaign on Sunday in the women’s qualifications. Other gymnasts, like Brazilian Rebeca Andrade and Dutch athletes Lieke Wevers and Naomi Visser, are also seeking to have their skills recognized in Paris.
