Si Jiahui Stuns Judd Trump with Career-Best Win to Reach Wuhan Open Final

Posted : 11 October 2024

Si Jiahui delivered a career-defining performance by defeating world number one Judd Trump 6-2 in the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open. The 22-year-old Chinese player showcased remarkable skill, scoring an impressive 672 points with three century breaks, including his first-ever 147 maximum. This milestone victory marked Si’s first win over Trump, reversing a six-match losing streak, including the German Masters final earlier this year. With this triumph, Si set up an all-Chinese final showdown against Xiao Guodong, where they’ll compete in a best-of-19-frame match for a £140,000 prize.

Trump, who has been in impeccable form throughout 2024, entered the match strong with a century break of 109 to claim the first frame. Si, however, quickly responded, delivering a 144 break and taking the lead with a 61 in the third frame. He then thrilled the home crowd with a flawless 147 maximum break, closing the mid-session with a 3-1 lead. After the break, Si continued to dominate, overcoming a 59-point start by Trump in the fifth frame with an 81 to win the frame, maintaining his control of the game.

Though Trump managed a break of 89 to narrow the gap to 4-2, Si’s steady play, supported by further contributions of 108 and 71, sealed the victory. Reflecting on his composure, Si noted how focusing on his own game and maintaining a calm mindset against Trump helped him secure this memorable win. He rated his performance highly, acknowledging his potting strength but recognizing room for improvement in safety play. Achieving his first maximum break was a personal highlight, fulfilling a long-time goal he had hoped to reach.

Trump took the loss in stride, offering high praise for Si’s exceptional display. He acknowledged that Si’s performance was one of the best he’s ever faced, comparing it to the legendary skills of John Higgins and Ronnie O'Sullivan. Trump commended Si’s poise and ability, suggesting that his counterpart stands well ahead of his peers and may now face added pressure to secure major titles, including the World Championship.
