Irish golfer Shane Lowry has confirmed that he will no longer be sponsored by the insulation company Kingspan. The 2019 Open champion announced the end of his partnership with the company in a brief statement on Tuesday.
The decision comes in the wake of significant criticism directed at Kingspan in the final report on the Grenfell Tower inquiry. The 2017 fire in west London, which tragically claimed 72 lives, was not directly attributed to Kingspan, but the report criticized the company for its "complete disregard for fire safety" in marketing one of its products.
Lowry, who had been sponsored by Kingspan since May 2017, noted in his statement that the decision to end their sponsorship agreement was mutually agreed upon and deemed the right move for all parties involved. The golfer added that neither he nor Kingspan would be making any further comments on the matter.
Throughout their sponsorship, Lowry prominently displayed Kingspan’s logo on his shirts during competitions, including his appearances in the Ryder Cup.
