Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu have advanced to their first Super 500 quarterfinal, marking a significant milestone just two months before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, for which they have already qualified. Angela Yu expressed her excitement, calling it "a massive boost" ahead of the prestigious event. The Australian duo had previously only reached the last eight stage at the Super 300 level, making it to the semifinals at both the Syed Modi India International in December 2023 and the Swiss Open in March.
Yu and Mapasa celebrated their achievement following a commanding 21-8, 21-11 victory over the home pair Go Pei Kee and Low Yeen Yuan at the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2024. Yu highlighted the significance of their win, noting that it reinforced their confidence in competing and succeeding at higher levels just before the Olympics. Despite their success, she acknowledged there is still room for improvement but took pride in reaching the Super 500 quarterfinal.
Mapasa, who is preparing for her second Olympics after competing in Tokyo 2020 with Gronya Somerville, echoed Yu's sentiments. She expressed satisfaction with their current performance level while recognizing the potential for further growth.
Reflecting on her past Olympic experience, Mapasa mentioned their notable victory over the higher-ranked Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen in Tokyo, underscoring her excitement to compete again, this time with Yu.
The Oceania champions had a taste of the Porte de la Chapelle Arena, the venue for badminton at Paris 2024, during their run to the second round of the French Open in March. Yu expressed her eagerness to return to the venue, describing it as a "dream-come-true" to represent their country at the Olympics. However, they face a challenging quarterfinal match against local favorites and second seeds Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan at the Axiata Arena, marking the first-ever meeting between the pairs.
