Sergio Garcia ends 25-year streak at The Open Championship
Posted : 05 July 2023
Sergio Garcia's impressive streak of 25 consecutive appearances at The Open Championship has come to an end as he fell short in a qualifying tournament. The 43-year-old golfer missed out on securing a spot by three shots, finishing tied sixth in the event held at West Lancashire Golf Club.
Due to his status as a LIV (Local and International Qualifying) player, Garcia was required to participate in the qualifier. Expressing his disappointment, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the game of golf and emphasized the need to avoid complacency.
Despite the setback, he expressed gratitude for having had the opportunity to compete in 25 Open Championships and expressed a desire to continue the streak.
Garcia had been in contention for one of the remaining qualifying spots during 24 of the 36 holes played. However, a challenging lie and a poor chip disrupted his momentum and ultimately prevented him from securing a place in the prestigious tournament. Reflecting on the missed opportunity, he acknowledged the closeness he felt to achieving his goal but recognized that his performance fell short.
Notably, Garcia has enjoyed notable success at The Open in the past. He finished as the runner-up in 2007 after a playoff loss to Padraig Harrington and tied for second place alongside Rickie Fowler, behind Rory McIlroy, in the 2014 tournament.
Other notable players like Graeme McDowell, a former US Open champion, and Jamie Donaldson, a 2014 Ryder Cup winner, also failed to qualify at the same venue.
The 151st Open Championship is scheduled to begin on July 20 at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake. Although Garcia will not be participating this year, his previous achievements and remarkable longevity in the tournament will be remembered.
