Sepp Straka secured his third US PGA Tour title with a confident two-under-par 70 at the American Express in La Quinta, California, holding off a late challenge to win by two strokes. Starting the final day with a four-shot lead, Straka maintained his advantage until the 13th hole, where he made his fourth birdie. However, his lead started to shrink after a bogey on the 16th, his first of the week, followed by another on the 18th.
Despite the setbacks, Straka’s total of 25-under-par was enough to finish ahead of former world No. 1 Justin Thomas, who carded a six-under-par 66.
Straka’s final round wasn’t without tension, as he admitted to battling nerves during the back nine. Despite his anxiety, he managed to keep his composure, maintaining a steady approach. He began his round with an 11-foot birdie at the first, followed by birdies at the fourth and seventh, allowing him to build on his commanding lead.
Although Straka’s game was tested, particularly after he made mistakes on the closing holes, his steady play throughout the round helped him stay ahead.
Jason Day and Justin Lower also made strong moves up the leaderboard but fell short. Day, who had been tied for second at the start of the day, made a costly bogey at the 18th, leaving him tied for third with Lower, who also shot a three-under-par 69.
Meanwhile, Charlie Hoffman, co-leader after two rounds, struggled in the final round, making a triple-bogey at the 13th hole, which ended his hopes for his first win since 2016. Hoffman finished tied for fifth, alongside Patrick Cantlay.
Justin Thomas mounted a strong charge early in the day, making five birdies on the front nine and cutting Straka’s lead. He continued his push with another birdie at the 11th, but the momentum stalled as the round progressed, with no further birdies. Despite his rally falling short, Thomas was pleased with his performance, acknowledging that he had a chance but ultimately couldn’t close the gap.
