Scrabble records huge number of entries, as 99 players from 21 states compete in three categories

Posted : 14 September 2024

From Asaba, the Delta State capital and venue of the 8th National Youth Games (NYG), comes the exciting news that a record 99 players from 21 states have been cleared to compete for honors in the Scrabble event at the Games.

The players will compete in the boys' and girls' doubles, boys' and girls' singles, and the team event for boys and girls.

The Multi-Purpose Hall of Stephen Keshi Stadium, which will host the Youth Scrabble competition, will run for three days.

The President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Toke Aka, says the young wordsmiths in Asaba for the National Youth Games (NYG) represent the future of the game not only in Nigeria but globally.

“The NSF will continue to expand the game of Scrabble by reaching out to schools to catch them young,” Toke Aka said.

At the last National Youth Games, 70 players from 17 states participated in the Scrabble event.

“We know most of the youngsters in attendance and what they can bring to the board. However, there will be many upsets as new faces are ready to showcase their word power, tactical play, board management, mental strength, and dexterity,” Engineer Toke Aka added.

Meanwhile, Team Kwara, which dominated the last Games, has promised to repeat the feat in Asaba.

Three members of the current team were in Asaba about 12 months ago: team captain Khalid Olosun, Funmilayo Balqis, and Hadiya Olokoju.

Two members of Team Kwara, Abdulqudus Olawale Aliu and Sufyan Boluwatife Olojoku, who participated in the last National Youth Games, have just returned from the World Youth Championship in Sri Lanka.
