The 2025 PGA Tour season is set to begin on Thursday at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, with 60 of the world's top golfers competing in The Sentry. The field features last year's top 50 players from the FedEx Cup standings, along with tournament winners from the past year. However, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will not be participating, as he suffered an injury on Christmas Day while cooking. A puncture wound on his right hand required surgery to remove glass fragments, forcing him to withdraw. His status for The American Express in two weeks remains uncertain.
World No. 2 Xander Schauffele is now the standout attraction in Hawaii, with Rory McIlroy also skipping the event. Schauffele enters the season after a stellar 2024 campaign that saw him secure his first two major titles—the PGA Championship and The Open Championship. Despite his success, he has focused on improving his short game during the offseason, admitting that his wedge play needed significant work. "Golf is tough," Schauffele remarked, emphasizing his ongoing efforts to refine his game.
The tournament field includes notable players such as Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris, Tony Finau, Max Homa, and Justin Thomas, alongside emerging talents like 2024 Rookie of the Year Nick Dunlap. Dunlap made headlines last season by becoming the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since 1991 and added a second victory after turning professional. Reflecting on his success, Dunlap described his second win as "validation" for his breakthrough year and a boost for his playoff ambitions.
In addition, Viktor Hovland remains in the field despite a bizarre injury, having broken his little toe in a hotel mishap. The defending champion, Chris Kirk, will also compete, along with past winners of The Sentry, including Thomas and Schauffele. With a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, the tournament promises an exciting start to the new PGA Tour season, even as Scheffler's absence casts a shadow over the event.
