Scottie Scheffler remains resolute about the Tour Championship's format despite ongoing questions regarding its fairness. As the season finale approaches, Scheffler acknowledges the "staggered scoring start" might not be ideal, but he believes that strong performance at the end of the season should prevail regardless of the format. This week, Scheffler will be aiming for his first FedEx Cup title in Atlanta, starting with a two-stroke lead over the competition.
Scheffler, who has had an exceptional season with six tournament wins, including the Masters and the Players Championship, as well as an Olympic gold medal, begins the Tour Championship at 10 under par. His closest rival, Xander Schauffele, starts at 8 under par. Despite Scheffler's significant accumulation of FedEx Cup points throughout the season, past changes to the format since 2019 have seen no player starting at the top of the leaderboard go on to win the cup.
Reflecting on the sport’s playoff dynamics, Scheffler likens the unpredictability of golf to other American sports, noting that even teams with great regular seasons sometimes falter in the playoffs. He emphasizes the inherent variability in golf and remains open to suggestions for improving the format, though he still prefers traditional 72-hole stroke play.
After a challenging week at the BMW Championship, where he finished tied for 33rd, Scheffler is focused on resetting and approaching the Tour Championship as he would any other golf tournament. With a two-stroke lead, he is eager to leverage this advantage and secure the victory. "At the end of the day, I want to win the golf tournament we’re playing," Scheffler stated, expressing confidence despite the format’s imperfections.
