Scottie Scheffler Defends Hero World Challenge Title with Stunning Victory

Posted : 09 December 2024

Scottie Scheffler capped off an extraordinary golf season by defending his title at the Hero World Challenge, securing his ninth victory of the year. The 28-year-old American shot a flawless nine-under 63 in the final round, finishing with a total of 25-under 263. His dominant performance in the 20-man invitational event, held at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas, earned him a six-stroke victory over South Korea's Tom Kim. Justin Thomas, a two-time major champion, finished third with a score of 270.

Scheffler's round included three birdies in the first four holes, allowing him to seize the lead early. His impressive performance made him only the third player to win back-to-back titles at this event, joining Tiger Woods (2006-2007) and Viktor Hovland (2021-2022). The victory added to a remarkable year for Scheffler, which also saw him win his second Masters green jacket and secure Olympic gold in Paris.

Reflecting on his victory, Scheffler expressed satisfaction with his solid round of golf, especially his good start. He acknowledged the success of his new putting grip and looked forward to using the off-season to fine-tune his game ahead of the 2024 season. Scheffler, who had not played a stroke-play event since the PGA Tour Championship in August, will now take a well-deserved break before resuming his campaign in January.

Thomas, who had started the final round with a one-stroke lead over Scheffler, struggled with his form. Despite birdies at the first and fourth holes, he faltered with bogeys at the second and fifth. Scheffler capitalized on Thomas' missteps, overtaking him early and never looking back. Kim made a strong push with birdies on the par-5 holes, but Scheffler’s consistent birdie-making, including a clutch 20-footer at the 10th, helped him maintain and extend his lead. The final birdies on the closing holes solidified Scheffler's dominant performance.
