Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace will compete in the Investec South African Open at Durban Country Club from February 27 to March 2, 2025, as part of a strong contingent of local talent. They will be joined by Tristin Galant, who has received a special invitation as the leading Sunshine Tour Transformation Player.
Galant, the highest-ranked professional from the Sunshine Tour’s Papwa Sewgolum Class for transformation players, will have the opportunity to compete alongside some of the best golfers from the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, underscoring Investec’s commitment to transformation in South African golf.
For Galant, playing at Durban Country Club will hold special significance, as the venue played a pivotal role in the career of Sewsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum, after whom the transformation initiative is named. He will be part of a strong South African field that includes defending champion Dean Burmester, as well as Daniel van Tonder, one of the tournament’s past winners.
The local challenge will also feature Shaun Norris, currently ranked fifth in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai standings, and emerging stars such as Ryan van Velzen and Robin Williams, both of whom have progressed from the Sunshine Tour to the DP World Tour.
Grace returns to the tournament having won the 2020 Investec South African Open, where he defeated Louis Oosthuizen in a closely contested final round. Reflecting on that victory, Grace expressed pride in winning one of the world’s oldest national Opens, especially against a player of Oosthuizen’s caliber.
Schwartzel, meanwhile, will be seeking to claim the title after twice finishing as the runner-up, including a playoff defeat. The 2011 Masters champion acknowledged that winning his home Open would be a career highlight, given the tournament’s rich history and prestige.
The event, boasting a $1.5 million prize fund and co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, returns to the historic Durban Country Club, which has recently undergone significant renovations.
Schwartzel has fond memories of competing at the venue, having finished second behind Tim Clark in 2005 and securing a fourth-place finish when Ernie Els triumphed in 2010.
With a strong field of South African contenders aiming for a seventh consecutive home victory, the tournament promises to be a thrilling battle on one of the country’s most storied courses.
