Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy remain in contention at the Genesis International, trailing leader Davis Thompson at the halfway mark in San Diego. Scheffler carded a five-under 67, sitting just one stroke behind Thompson, who secured the lead at eight under with a closing birdie.
McIlroy also shot 67, surging into contention with five birdies in eight holes before bogeys on the 12th and 14th set him back, though he recovered with birdies on the 15th and 17th.
McIlroy admitted he played well overall but missed opportunities on the par fives, an area he aims to improve heading into the weekend. Meanwhile, Scheffler, last year’s Masters champion, struggled with accuracy off the tee, hitting just five fairways, and acknowledged the need for better driving to stay in the hunt.
Thompson, who secured his first PGA Tour victory last year, had a strong start with six birdies in his first 13 holes before back-to-back bogeys, but he steadied his round with a birdie at the 16th and another at the 18th.
The tournament, typically played at Riviera Country Club, was moved to Torrey Pines due to the Los Angeles wildfires. With the final rounds approaching, all eyes will be on Thompson to see if he can hold off the pressure from two of the world’s top golfers.
