Scheffler Faces Strong Competition as McIlroy Gains Momentum for Masters

Posted : 08 April 2025

Scottie Scheffler's once-imposing dominance in golf has softened slightly as the 2025 season unfolds without a victory so far. Despite being the defending Masters champion, Scheffler’s grip on the world No. 1 spot has tightened with the emergence of other contenders. Heading into Augusta National this week, he remains the favorite to claim his third green jacket, but the gap between him and second-ranked Rory McIlroy has narrowed, particularly in terms of betting odds.

McIlroy, already a two-time winner in 2025, enters the Masters with momentum after securing titles at Pebble Beach and The Players Championship. The Northern Irishman is still on his quest for a career grand slam, with the Masters being the final piece of the puzzle. His impressive form has made him a strong challenger this week, as evidenced by his significant backing from bettors, with 16 percent of all bets placed on him to win.

At DraftKings, Scheffler remains the +400 favorite, but his backing has decreased, drawing only 10 percent of the total bets placed. Meanwhile, McIlroy has gained more support, with 16 percent of bettors putting their faith in him, followed by Bryson DeChambeau at +1800 with 11 percent. Similarly, at BetMGM, McIlroy’s odds have shortened from +1200 to +650, and he has drawn the most money and bets, although he is not the biggest liability, a title held by DeChambeau.

Scheffler, despite not winning yet in 2025, has posted solid finishes, including a T3 at the Genesis Invitational and a T2 at the Texas Children's Houston Open. He has not placed worse than a tie for 25th in his six starts this year, following a hand injury surgery. While Jon Rahm has remained steady with top-10 finishes, he enters the Masters with relatively less attention and backing, even though his odds are still competitive at +1300, sitting behind McIlroy and Scheffler.
