Sarah Storey of Britain added to her illustrious Paralympic career by securing her 19th gold medal in the C4-5 road race on Friday. In a tightly contested race in Clichy-sous-Bois, an eastern suburb of Paris, Storey narrowly defeated French teenager Heidi Gaugain at the finish line, with Colombia’s Paula Ossa Veloza taking the bronze. The race covered 71 kilometers, showcasing Storey’s enduring dominance and tactical prowess.
At 46, Storey, who was born without a fully functional left hand, has now accumulated a total of 30 Paralympic medals across her career, which began with swimming at the 1992 Barcelona Games. Reflecting on her latest victory, Storey expressed her amazement and delight, emphasizing the significance of her wheel being at the front as she crossed the line. Despite her age, Storey’s experience and strategic use of her speed played a crucial role in her success.
Storey is not ready to rule out the possibility of competing in her 10th Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. While she plans to savor her current achievement, she remains open to future opportunities, acknowledging that the excitement of her recent race is still settling in. Storey’s remarkable performance continues to solidify her legacy as one of the most successful athletes in Paralympic history.
