Despite a challenging start with a triple-bogey on the second hole, Samuel Simpson rebounded impressively, carding a three-under 69 on the second day of the Altron Big Easy Tour event at Kyalami Country Club.
Simpson's triple-bogey on the par-four 11th was followed by a birdie on the par-five, only to face setbacks with a drop on the 14th.
However, the 21-year-old showcased resilience, securing birdies on holes 15, 17, and 18 to turn in 33. Co-leading with Coert Groenewald at nine-under, Simpson expressed optimism and the intent to apply lessons learned from the challenging hole into the upcoming rounds.
Groenewald mirrored Simpson's consistency, posting a 69 to match the tournament total of nine-under. The duo maintains a narrow one-shot lead over Makhetha Mazibuko, who sits at eight-under after carding successive 68s.
Ruan de Smidt, sharing fourth place at seven-under with Gerard du Plooy, slipped from the overnight lead with a second-round score of 71. Marcel Steyn Scholtz and Phillip Geerts are tied for sixth at six-under, while Dayne Moore, Franklin Manchest, and Leon Vorster round out the top 10 at five-under heading into the final round at Kyalami.
