Sam Ryder took the lead at the US PGA Tour Texas Open on Thursday with a brilliant nine-under-par 63, finishing one stroke ahead of Keith Mitchell. Ryder's impressive back-nine performance included birdies at six of the last seven holes, starting with a 21-foot birdie on the 12th and finishing with a tap-in birdie at the par-five 18th.
Despite battling neck pain that forced him to withdraw from Wednesday's pro-am, Ryder managed to deliver a bogey-free round, making 15 one-putts and using just 21 putts overall.
Mitchell, who had an eagle and six birdies for an eight-under 64, set the early pace and remains in contention. He credited a fortunate break for his eagle at the eighth, where his second shot from the left rough landed just three feet from the pin.
Mitchell has been in strong form lately, having led or shared the lead after the first round in the past two events, and is focused on putting together solid rounds to capitalize on his momentum.
Brian Harman, who is gearing up for the Masters, sits in third after posting a six-under 66, which included seven birdies and one bogey.
Along with Ryder and Mitchell, Harman is one of the players vying for a spot in next week's major, with three-time major winner Jordan Spieth also in the mix.
Spieth made six birdies and one bogey to card a five-under 67, sharing fourth place with Carson Young. The competition remains wide open as players head into the next rounds at TPC San Antonio.
