South Korea's Ryu Hae-ran overcame a challenging third round to claim victory over compatriot Ko Jin-young in a playoff at the LPGA's FM Championship at TPC Boston on Sunday. After a stellar 10-under-par 62 on Friday, Ryu stumbled with a six-over 78 in the third round, placing her four shots behind the overnight leader and 15-time LPGA winner Ko. However, Ryu regained her focus and birdied the first four holes on Sunday, finishing with a six-under 64.
Ryu's only bogey on the par-three 16th brought her back into a tie with Ko at 15-under, setting up an anxious wait to see if Ko could clinch a birdie in the final two holes. Ko had started strong with an eagle at the par-five second and another at the par-four fourth, but after a bogey on the 10th, she only managed one more birdie on the 14th. A two-hour rain delay and a missed nine-foot putt on the final green forced a playoff between the two competitors.
In the playoff, both returned to the par-five 18th, where Ko missed a 30-foot par putt, and Ryu calmly sank a 12-foot birdie putt to secure her second LPGA Tour victory. Reflecting on her win, Ryu expressed relief after coming close to victory several times earlier in the year but falling short. "I was so nervous at the playoff, but maybe Ko Jin-young was the same," Ryu said.
China's Liu Ruixin finished just one shot behind at 14-under after a remarkable eight-under 64, which included birdies on each of her first seven holes. This round marked her second consecutive 64, the lowest of her career. American Allisen Corpuz and Thailand's Atthaya Thitikul finished tied for fourth at 13-under, each shooting 67s.
