Ryggs Johnston Claims First Professional Win at Australian Open

Posted : 01 December 2024

Ryggs Johnston claimed his first professional win at the Australian Open on Saturday with a 68, finishing 18-under for the tournament. The American rookie made an impressive charge, sinking an eagle and five birdies while only recording three bogeys. His performance earned him a three-shot victory over Australia's Curtis Luck and a four-shot advantage over Marc Leishman and Jasper Stubbs. Johnston's victory secured him an exemption for next year's British Open.

Johnston, who turned professional this year, earned his playing card through the DP World Tour qualifying school. Despite being tired from travel and lacking a practice round due to weather conditions, he had no major expectations, which he believes played a key role in his success. "It hasn't quite sunk in yet, but an amazing feeling," he said after the win. His triumph in Melbourne marks a significant milestone in his young career.

In the women’s competition, South Korean Shin Ji-yai secured her 65th career title with a victory in a thrilling finish. The 36-year-old, a two-time British Open champion, had a commanding seven-shot lead with just eight holes remaining. However, South Africa's Ashleigh Buhai mounted a strong comeback, reducing Shin's lead to just two shots. Ultimately, Shin held on to win, with Buhai finishing second and 17-year-old amateur Yang Hyo-jin placing third.

The mixed Australian Open featured men and women competing in alternating groups, with Johnston and LIV Golf’s Lucas Herbert leading the men’s field heading into the final day. However, Herbert struggled in challenging conditions at Kingston Heath, allowing Johnston to surge ahead. Shin, who started the final round with a narrow lead, was challenged by Buhai’s late push but managed to seal the victory. "It was not easy, but now I can breathe," said Shin after securing the title.
