Ryder Cup 2023: Brooks Koepka may need captain's wildcard to secure US Ryder Cup spot
Posted : 21 August 2023
Brooks Koepka, the US PGA Championship winner, faces the possibility of needing a captain's wildcard to secure his spot in the US Ryder Cup team. Despite playing on the breakaway LIV tour, Koepka slipped out of the top six automatic spots during the final weekend of the qualifying process. Captain Zach Johnson now knows half of his team for the Ryder Cup, and there's speculation about whether Koepka will be included among the captain's wildcard picks.
Koepka's situation is an interesting one due to his participation in the LIV tour, which is not recognized in the Ryder Cup qualifying process. Despite this, his performance in major events seemed to put him in a strong position for selection. However, Max Homa's joint fifth-place finish at the recent BMW Championship secured his automatic berth, leaving Koepka in a potentially uncertain position.
While Koepka's presence in the Ryder Cup team would be controversial given his LIV tour involvement, there is a likelihood that he will still be chosen. The US captain has a somewhat lukewarm view of LIV players, and there are divided opinions on whether Koepka's inclusion would be beneficial for the team's cohesion.
Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, and Patrick Cantlay have secured their automatic spots in the US Ryder Cup team. Johnson will announce his captain's wildcard picks after the Tour Championship.
In the context of the European team, Europe's qualifying period is ending, and captain Luke Donald will soon announce his wildcard picks. Europe's Solheim Cup team has also finalized its eight automatic qualifiers, with four wildcards to be announced.
Additionally, there's an exciting series of team golf events on the horizon, including the Solheim Cup, Ryder Cup, and Walker Cup. The Great Britain and Ireland team is aiming to win the Walker Cup for the first time since 2015. The American Walker Cup team features strong players, including newly crowned US Amateur champion Nick Dunlap and number one Gordon Sargent.
