Ryan van Velzen secured his third Sunshine Tour victory in the Mediclinic Invitational at Maccauvlei Golf Club, finishing an impressive four shots ahead. The 22-year-old golfer showcased his dominance with a final-round score of 64, bringing his overall tally to 25 under par.
Neil Schietekat claimed the second spot at 21 under par after a closing round of 67. The third position was shared by LB Boshoff, Jason Roets, Jovan Rebula, Dylan Mostert, and Yurav Premlall, all finishing at 18 under par.
Van Velzen's recent victory adds to his successful run, including challenges in the DP World Tour co-sanctioned Investec South African Open, where he secured a second-place finish. The golfer, surprised by his performance after taking a month-long break from the game, expressed, "I can't explain it actually. I took a month off from the game and it just came back to me. I got better without practicing."
Despite a close competition with Schietekat early in the final round, Van Velzen's excellent ball-striking and a strategic approach helped him pull away from the field with five birdies, an eagle, and just one bogey.
Van Velzen's victory comes ahead of a busy period on the Sunshine Tour, featuring tournaments co-sanctioned with the European Challenge Tour and the DP World Tour.
The young golfer has set his sights on winning the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, expressing the significance of this achievement, stating, "To win that on the Sunshine Tour would be incredible because this tour is just so competitive. That's my next goal."
