Russell Henley delivered an impressive performance at East Lake Golf Club on Sunday, thrilling Georgia Bulldogs fans with a standout 9-under-par 62 in the final round of the Tour Championship. The Macon native and former University of Georgia star capped off his round with a dramatic pitch-in eagle at the par-5 18th, which secured the lowest score of the tournament. Henley’s final shot, after missing left, took a couple of bounces before landing in the hole, adding to the excitement.
Henley’s round included four birdies on the front nine and just one bogey at No. 10, which he quickly countered with additional birdies at Nos. 11, 13, 14, and 17. Reflecting on his performance, Henley noted a crucial 20-footer birdie on the challenging fourth hole, which he described as a significant achievement given the difficulty of the hole and the condition of the greens.
Finishing at 19 under par, Henley tied for fourth place with Xander Schauffele and Adam Scott. This was Henley’s fourth appearance at the Tour Championship, and he previously tied for third in 2017, demonstrating his consistent strong play in Atlanta. His outstanding performance raises anticipation about his potential inclusion in the US Presidents Cup team, as Henley is a candidate for a captain’s pick.
Henley expressed hope that his strong finish would catch the attention of captain Jim Furyk, who will finalize the team selections soon. With a competitive field for the remaining spots, including notable players like Tony Finau and Max Homa, Henley remains optimistic about his chances. Additionally, Henley was thrilled about the University of Georgia football team’s impressive season opener, although he missed watching the game.
