Ruoning Yin Clinches Maybank Championship with Record-Breaking Final Round

Posted : 28 October 2024

Ruoning Yin secured a thrilling one-stroke victory at the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after birdieing the 18th hole and finishing with a final-round score of 65. Her impressive total of 23-under 265 not only clinched the win but also set a new tournament scoring record. This triumph marked her third victory of the 2024 season and her second in just three appearances, following her recent win at the Buick LPGA Shanghai in China just two weeks prior.

Entering the final round tied at 16-under with Jeeno Thitikul from Thailand and Haeran Ryu from South Korea, Yin and her competitors quickly intensified the competition by each making birdies on the first hole. By the time they reached the turn, Yin had gained a narrow lead at 20-under, while Ryu and Thitikul trailed closely behind at 19-under and 18-under, respectively.

Maintaining her impressive performance, Yin continued her no-bogey round by making birdies at holes 10 and 12, moving her total to 22-under. Despite Ryu and Thitikul's efforts to keep pace at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, Ryu's bogey on the 17th hole left her two strokes behind Yin as they approached the final hole. Thitikul's birdie at the par-5 18th put additional pressure on Yin, who needed to sink her putt to secure the victory and avoid a playoff scenario.

After the round, Yin reflected on the tough competition, praising Ryu and Thitikul for pushing her to perform at her best. She emphasized the importance of patience throughout her game, especially after a strong start. "I had a really good start on the front nine, but after 12, I had to slow down a little. David, my caddie, reminded me to stay patient, and I’m really happy that I did,” Yin noted.

With her victory, Yin joined the ranks of Shanshan Feng, the most successful golfer from China, who won the tournament in 2014 and 2016. "I saw her picture on the way to the locker and was inspired by her achievements," Yin said, expressing her joy in becoming the second Chinese player to win in Malaysia. Thitikul and Ryu finished strong, with scores of 66 and 67, respectively, while Bailey Tardy and Maja Stark tied for fourth at 16-under. Defending champion Celine Boutier concluded the tournament with a 72, placing her at 12-under and tied for 12th.
