Rory McIlroy Trails Xander Schauffele at Wells Fargo Championship Opener

Posted : 10 May 2024

Rory McIlroy kicked off the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte with a commendable first round, finishing three shots behind leader Xander Schauffele. The Northern Irish golfer carded a solid four-under-par 67, placing him in a tie for second with Collin Morikawa and Alex Noren. McIlroy's front nine showcased his prowess, highlighted by an eagle, three birdies, and a solitary bogey, propelling him to a promising start at four under par.

Despite his strong start, McIlroy encountered challenges on the back nine, where he struggled to maintain momentum, recording three birdies and three bogeys. Nevertheless, his performance signifies a potential resurgence as he navigates familiar terrain at Quail Hollow, where he clinched his first PGA Tour victory in 2010 and has since amassed three tournament wins.

Reflecting on his connection with Charlotte's fans, McIlroy expressed gratitude for their support throughout his journey and aims to create more memorable moments in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele emerged as the early frontrunner, showcasing consistency with a round that included six birdies and an eagle, offset by just one dropped shot. Among other contenders, England's Tommy Fleetwood found himself level par alongside Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose, who finished three over par.

With the US PGA Championship looming next week in Valhalla as the second men's major of the year, the competition at the Wells Fargo Championship sets the stage for an intriguing buildup to the prestigious event.
