Rory McIlroy tops PGA Tour's player impact programme, surpassing Tiger Woods

Posted : 28 November 2023

Rory McIlroy has secured the PGA Tour's $15m prize for generating the most media interest in 2023, beating Tiger Woods who won in 2021 and 2022. The Player Impact Programme (PIP) considers metrics like Google searches, news mentions, and social media reach. McIlroy, who recently resigned from the tour's Policy Board, tops the PIP list after winning his fifth DP World Tour Race to Dubai title. Woods earns $12m for finishing second, while Masters winner Jon Rahm and others are among the top earners in the PIP standings.

Introduced in 2021, the PIP rewards players who generate the most interest in the PGA Tour. McIlroy finished second to Woods in 2022 but claims the top spot this year. His fifth DP World Tour Race to Dubai title contributed to his success. Woods, returning to action after seven months, earns $12m for finishing second in PIP. Masters winner Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, and Scottie Scheffler complete the top five, with Tommy Fleetwood earning $5m for tying seventh.

McIlroy, unable to defend his FedEx Cup title, finished fourth behind Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, and Wyndham Clark. The PIP bonus pool for the top 10 players will be $50m next year, a change from the $100m awarded to the top 20 this year. Woods, recovering from ankle surgery, will return to action in the Hero World Challenge. Both Woods and McIlroy are involved in the virtual golf competition TGL, which was postponed to early 2025 due to facility damage in Florida.
