Rory McIlroy Reflects on Near Misses as He Aims for Victory

Posted : 24 September 2024

Rory McIlroy finds himself pondering what it takes to secure a victory in golf, a perplexing thought for a player who has achieved 40 wins throughout his illustrious career. His recent runner-up finish at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth marks his second consecutive second-place result, having previously lost to Rasmus Hojgaard at the Irish Open. Both tournaments, set against the backdrop of his native Northern Ireland and the prestigious DP World Tour event, drew large crowds eager to see him triumph.

Despite three wins this season, McIlroy's close calls at coveted titles have added to a growing list of disappointments in 2024, including losses to Tommy Fleetwood in the Dubai Invitational and struggles down the stretch at the US Open. This pattern raises questions about what might have been for the 35-year-old golfer, especially as he consistently finds himself in contention. However, his latest defeat against Billy Horschel may be easier to process than others, as he shot a 67 and finished 20 under par while still not playing at his best.

During the final round, McIlroy showcased his tenacity with an impressive eagle on the par-five 17th hole, aided by a brilliant 46-foot putt. Standing on the final hole, he faced a long approach shot that could have sealed the victory with a birdie. In that moment, the pressure of potentially securing a win weighed heavily on him, and despite his skill, he appeared nervous, ultimately making par instead of capitalizing on the opportunity.

While McIlroy's playoff performance included two excellent birdies, Horschel triumphed with an eagle from 30 feet, underscoring the fine margins that have defined McIlroy's near misses this season. Reflecting on his experiences, McIlroy acknowledged the inevitability of disappointments but remained confident in his abilities.

He has performed exceptionally well on the DP World Tour, consistently finishing in the top four, and is poised to challenge for another title, reinforcing his status as a top competitor in European golf. As he stated, he knows he is a better golfer now than five years ago, emphasizing that turning close calls into victories is just a matter of time.
