Rory McIlroy Prepares for Masters with Elbow Injury and Swing Adjustments

Posted : 01 April 2025

Rory McIlroy revealed that he is managing an elbow injury as he prepares for next week's Masters at Augusta. Despite the discomfort, McIlroy had a strong finish at the Texas Children's Houston Open, shooting a 4-under 31 on the front nine and carding a 65-64 over the weekend to tie for fifth.

However, the World No. 2 acknowledged his right elbow has been bothering him, and he plans to receive treatment to ensure it is ready for Augusta. "Get some treatment on that and make sure that that's OK going into Augusta," he said.

McIlroy is skipping this week's Texas Valero Open to allow himself time to rest and recover from the injury. He also made a slight adjustment to his driver after the third round in Houston, taking some loft off it to reduce spin and improve control.

The tweak helped him feel more comfortable, especially in the wind, and it contributed to his solid performance in Houston. Despite the injury, McIlroy has had an impressive start to 2025 with two wins and a top-4 finish in Dubai.

With the Masters just days away, McIlroy acknowledged that his game isn't yet where he wants it to be, especially as he chases the elusive green jacket. "Still feel like I've got some stuff to work on," he said, noting that his game isn't quite at the level he'd like for Augusta. He plans to work with his coach, Michael Bannon, to fine-tune his iron play, wedges, and short game in the coming days.

McIlroy is focused on feeling comfortable and ready for the Masters, the only major championship still missing from his career, as he aims to break a major drought that dates back to the 2014 PGA Championship.
