Rory McIlroy acknowledged that his hectic schedule in 2024 left him feeling drained and hinted at a significant reduction in his commitments for the 2025 season, potentially cutting back by as many as nine tournaments. Reflecting on his season, which included the added pressure of the Olympics, McIlroy admitted that the packed calendar took a toll on him, especially after the US Open. Despite the fatigue, McIlroy finished the season strong, tying for ninth at the Tour Championship with a 5-under-par 66 in the final round.
Looking ahead, McIlroy plans to rethink his approach for 2025, intending to incorporate more breaks into his schedule. He recognized the need for rest after hitting a "wall" midway through the year and acknowledged that his current responsibilities differ from when he was younger. McIlroy's goal is to scale back to around 18 to 20 tournaments annually, a significant drop from the 27 events he participated in this year.
Even with the challenges of a demanding season, McIlroy achieved notable success, including two PGA Tour wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship. He also secured a victory on the European Tour at the Dubai Desert Classic. Despite these accomplishments, McIlroy felt the strain of the busy year, particularly after a disappointing second-place finish at the US Open, followed by a missed cut at The Open Championship and a lackluster performance at the St. Jude Championship.
As the 2025 season approaches, McIlroy is set to participate in five more events in the fall before reassessing his schedule. With 26 PGA Tour victories under his belt, McIlroy is focused on balancing his competitive drive with the need for a more sustainable workload, aiming for a reduced but carefully managed schedule moving forward.
