Rory McIlroy described his opening day at the European Tour's PGA Championship as "weird," highlighting an unusual incident where he broke a club mid-shot and had to putt left-handed. Despite these challenges, the 2014 champion at Wentworth managed to finish with a five-under par 72, placing him two strokes behind the clubhouse leader, Matthew Baldwin.
The club mishap occurred on the par-five 12th hole, where McIlroy's approach shot landed just six feet from the hole, even after the clubhead detached upon impact. Reflecting on the incident, he noted that he had previously noticed the ferrule appearing loose on another shot but hadn’t realized the head would separate from the shaft during play. Fortunately, he was able to complete the hole without further issues and had the club repaired by the 16th hole.
Adding to the day's challenges, McIlroy had to putt left-handed at the eighth hole after his ball ended up on the edge of a pond. He managed the unusual shot reasonably well, getting the speed correct, though he missed the line. Nonetheless, he successfully saved par, showcasing his adaptability on the course.
Matthew Baldwin, who leads the tournament, expressed satisfaction with his performance despite typically struggling with nerves. With a one-shot lead over Niklas Norgaard and Thomas Detry, Baldwin maintained focus in front of the crowd. Other notable performances included Ryder Cup teammates Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre, who matched McIlroy’s score, while 2019 winner Danny Willett finished with a 68 after a challenging recovery from shoulder surgery.
