Rory McIlroy may return to top by winning FedEx St. Jude Championship

Posted : 11 August 2023
Rory McIlroy commenced the year as the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking; however, his position was overtaken by Scottie Scheffler following Scheffler's victory at the WM Phoenix Open. Now, McIlroy finds himself with an opportunity to reciprocate the situation.

If McIlroy secures a victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where both he and Scheffler shot a 67 in the opening round, McIlroy could regain the coveted world No. 1 ranking as long as Scheffler finishes T5 or worse.

Ranked No. 2 currently, McIlroy has been on an impressive streak throughout the summer, securing spots within the top 10 in his last seven appearances, including strong performances at the PGA Championship (T7), U.S. Open (2nd), and The Open Championship (T6). The four-time major champion secured his second victory of the season and 24th of his PGA TOUR career at the Genesis Scottish Open in July.

On the other hand, Scheffler has demonstrated remarkable consistency on the TOUR, accumulating 15 top 10 finishes and 13 top 5 finishes in 20 starts. McIlroy and Scheffler, alongside world No. 3 and current FedExCup leader Jon Rahm, have been grouped together for the first two rounds of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, marking the beginning of the Playoffs.

Rahm had briefly taken the world No. 1 spot with his triumph at The Genesis Invitational in February; however, he relinquished the top position when Scheffler emerged victorious at THE PLAYERS Championship in March. Unfortunately for Rahm, he faced challenges on Thursday, struggling with a score of 73.

Since July 2021, no player outside of this trio has held the coveted top position in the OWGR.
