Rory Mcilroy Gets Penalized $3 Million For Pulling Out of The RBC Heritage - Reports
Posted : 19 April 2023
Rory McIlroy, the third-ranked golfer in the world, was penalized $3 million for pulling out of this week's RBC Heritage due to new PGA regulations on "designated tournaments."
The $12 million payout to McIlroy from the Player Impact Program will be reduced by the punishment, which is for a second absence from a scheduled tournament, according to Golf Digest and Sports Illustrated.
No explanation was given for the 33-year-old Northern Ireland star's withdrawal from the tournament, which got underway Thursday at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
McIlroy missed the cut at last week's Masters after carding a 5-over 77 on Friday.
A modification the tour made last season as part of a series of responses to LIV Golf's development required any player in the top 20 of the Player Impact Program to take part in specified tournaments.
For personal or business reasons, players are permitted to miss one scheduled tournament, although McIlroy previously missed the season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.
