Rory McIlroy enters contention after Jon Rahm misses first cut

Posted : 24 June 2023
Rory McIlroy surged into contention at the Travelers Championship with an impressive six-under 64 in the second round. The Northern Irishman is currently tied for 10th place at eight under par, trailing the joint leaders Denny McCarthy and Keegan Bradley by seven strokes.

Starting from the 10th hole, McIlroy recorded five birdies at the turn and added three more over the following six holes. However, a double-bogey on the eighth hole, where he had previously scored a hole-in-one on Thursday, set him back.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy remarked, "After the hole-in-one on eight yesterday, to make a double bogey there today, it's almost like I might as well have just made two threes." Nevertheless, he acknowledged that his overall performance was much improved, particularly on the greens, and expressed satisfaction with his round, considering it put him back in contention for the tournament.

On the other hand, world number two Jon Rahm endured a forgettable day with the putter. The Spanish golfer, who clinched the Masters title in April, struggled to sink putts longer than four feet. His score of two under means he will miss a cut for the first time since September 2021, ending his streak of 25 consecutive cuts, which was the longest active run on the PGA Tour.

Denny McCarthy followed up his remarkable opening round of 60 with a solid five-under 65, maintaining his momentum at 15 under. He shares the lead with Keegan Bradley, the 2011 US PGA Champion, who carded a bogey-free 63. Their 36-hole scores mark the lowest ever recorded since the tournament moved to TPC River Highlands in 1984.

Chez Reavie is just two shots behind the leaders, while former Masters champion Adam Scott sits at 10 under. The chasing pack includes Norway's Viktor Hovland and four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.
