Rory McIlroy bemoans 'Bad Swings' that cost him Irish Open victory

Posted : 11 September 2023
Rory McIlroy expressed his frustration over some "bad swings" that cost him a potential second Irish Open victory. Despite being in contention, McIlroy had a challenging final day at the K Club, where he found the water four times, ultimately finishing five strokes behind the winner, Vincent Norrman.

Reflecting on his missed opportunity, McIlroy identified the critical moment at the 16th hole where he hit two balls into the water. He acknowledged the role of "a couple of bad swings" in his downfall and noted that holes 7 and 16 had been problematic for him throughout the week, with a total of six balls landing in the water on those two holes.

Despite the disappointment, McIlroy found some positive aspects in his performance, including improvements in his back injury, which had been bothering him recently, and his accuracy off the tee during the final round.

While he managed to get the ball in the fairway, he acknowledged that he didn't capitalize on those opportunities. He mentioned a missed birdie on the 10th hole and the subsequent error on the 11th hole, followed by a successful putt on the 13th to recover.

Despite the disappointment in how the tournament finished, McIlroy emphasized his intention to regroup and focus on upcoming events, including a Ryder Cup practice trip to Rome and the PGA Championship at Wentworth. He recognized the need to work on addressing a recurring right miss in his game over the next few days.
