Rory McIlroy, ranked second in the world, and Open champion Brian Harman produced stunning birdie chip shots on the 17th hole to both secure a share of the lead after the opening round of the BMW Championship in Chicago. They both carded impressive five-under par 65s, putting them one stroke ahead of England's Matt Fitzpatrick and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who are part of a group of six players at four under.
The tournament features the top 50 players in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup rankings. McIlroy, hailing from Northern Ireland, a winner of three Tour Championships, executed a remarkable shot from the rough left of the fairway, bouncing it through a greenside bunker. He followed this up with an incredible 40-foot chip from behind the green.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy admitted, "I got lucky, got through the bunker. I certainly wasn't expecting to make three when the tee shot was in the air. It was a nice one to make. It was a great bonus."
Shortly thereafter, Harman showcased his prowess by sinking a birdie chip from 32 feet at the same 17th hole, allowing him to join McIlroy at the top of the leaderboard. Earlier, he had also made a remarkable 42-foot birdie putt at the par-three 16th hole.
Harman commented on his performance, saying, "When I missed, I got a little lucky to get it back into play. I chipped in twice, made some putts, played a pretty solid round."
Defending champion Patrick Cantlay, who has clinched the title for two consecutive years, opened with a solid round of 68, placing him three shots behind the leaders. He is tied in this position with players like Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive tournament ahead.
