Posted : 23 June 2023
Rory McIlroy made an exciting breakthrough on the PGA Tour by hitting his first hole-in-one during the Travelers Championship. Despite a mixed performance, the Northern Irishman's highlight came on the par-three eighth hole, where he aced the 214-yard shot. McIlroy, the US Open runner-up, finished the opening round at two-under-par.
Denny McCarthy stole the show with an exceptional round of 60, the lowest score of his career. McCarthy started the tournament with four consecutive birdies and continued his impressive form, adding six more birdies without dropping a shot, ultimately finishing at 10-under-par.
Expressing his positive mindset, McCarthy said, "I felt positive from the second I woke up this morning." He attributed his success to everything clicking together, making it an overall great day for him.
McCarthy currently leads the Travelers Championship in Connecticut by two shots, followed closely by Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott. World number one, Scottie Scheffler, concluded his round with a commendable seven-under 63.
For McIlroy, this hole-in-one marked his first in competition since his last one during the European tour in Abu Dhabi back in 2015. Reflecting on the shot, McIlroy described it as the best of the day, emphasizing his delight in seeing the ball go into the hole, while also finding the experience really cool.
